DeAngelo & Benson Announce Middlesex Municipality To Receive Funding for Bikeway Project

Funding Aimed to Improve Quality of Life without Burdening Local Property Taxes (TRENTON) - Assembly Democrats Wayne DeAngelo and Daniel Benson (Both D-Mercer, Middlesex) announced Wednesday a Middlesex municipality is one of five towns in the state to receive funding from the Bikeway Grant Program. Plainsboro Township in Middlesex County received $210,000 to advance their Bikeway projects. "This is great news for Plainsboro," said DeAngelo. "The town can now work to complete their Bikeway project without saddling taxpayers with the costs. This is a win-win for the town and its residents." "The cost of improvements to local roads can become a burden on taxpayers without the help of funding from programs like the Bikeway Grant Program," said Benson, who is the chairman of the Assembly Transportation Committee. "We are proud that one of the towns in our district is one of the five municipalities in the state to receive this grant." The Bikeway Grant Program is part of NJDOT's Local Aid program funded through the State Transportation Trust Fund (TTF). The recent gas tax increase as part TTF renewal in 2016 has provided more than double the funds for local road and bridge safety improvement projects to $400 million, most of which goes to county and municipal aid. The Bikeway Grant Program provides $1 million in grants annually to counties and municipalities to promote bikeways as an alternate mode of transportation to support the counties and municipalities to promote bikeways as an alternate mode of transportation to support the state's goal of achieving 1,000 new miles of dedicated bikeways in New Jersey. Brigantine and Ventnor City in Atlantic County, Voorhees in Camden County, and Monroe in Gloucester County are also recipients of the Bikeway grant. May is National Bike Month and is sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists.
