KARABINCHAK, KENNEDY & DEANGELO ON AGREEMENTS TO END THE USE OF COAL GENERATION

(TRENTON) –The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities recently approved a petition to modify Power Purchase Agreements and Power Sales Agreements, which will put an end to coal-fired generation in the State after a brief transition period.

Assembly members Robert Karabinchak (D-Middlesex), Chair of the Special Committee on Infrastructure and Natural Resources, James Kennedy (D-Middlesex, Somerset, Union), Chair of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee, and Wayne DeAngelo (D-Mercer, Middlesex), Chair of the Telecommunications and Utilities Committee issued the following joint statement:

“Establishing a path to ending the production of coal-fired energy in our State is an enormous step. It will allow New Jersey to continue decreasing greenhouse gas emissions and move closer to a more environment-friendly future. The transition toward renewable energy is not an overnight process; however, as a result of these agreements, we look forward to greatly reducing our CO2 emissions by transitioning to natural gas while more environmentally safe energy projects continue to develop.

“With the continuous advancements in clean energy technologies, it is only right to phase out harmful energy sources such as coal. New Jersey can now focus on more efficient clean energy use, which will benefit residents for generations to come.”
