(TRENTON) – Senator Linda R. Greenstein, Assemblyman Wayne DeAngelo, and Assemblywoman Tennille R. McCoy (all D-Mercer, Middlesex) issued the following statement regarding the passing of Brian M. Hughes, who died today at the age of 68.
“We are heartbroken by the news of the passing of Brian M. Hughes, a devoted public servant and a cherished member of one of New Jersey’s most distinguished political families.
“As Mercer County Executive for 20 years, Brian led with integrity, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to the people he served. His leadership transformed county government—modernizing services, expanding access to open space, and strengthening infrastructure that improved everyday life for thousands of residents.
“Brian's public service was deeply personal. He carried forward the proud legacy of his father, Governor and Chief Justice Richard J. Hughes, while forging his own path defined by empathy, inclusiveness, and dedication. He was not only a skilled administrator but a kind and generous soul who made people feel seen, heard, and valued.
“We were honored to work alongside Brian over the years and to witness his unwavering belief in government’s ability to be a force for good. Mercer County—and New Jersey—are better because of his leadership.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Hughes family, his loved ones, and all who mourn this tremendous loss. May his memory be a blessing, and may we continue his legacy of service with the same heart and humility that he embodied every day.”
